Psalms 80:17 Ver. 17. Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand,.... Which some understand of the people of Israel in general, beloved, supported, and strengthened, by the Lord: and others of the then king of Israel, or Judah, the vinedresser, or keeper of the vineyard under God; praying that he might be directed, supported, and protected, by the Lord; but it seems better to understand it with R. Obadiah on the place, and Abarbinel {x} of the Messiah; and so Aben Ezra interprets it either of Israel, or of Messiah the son of Ephraim.

Now it was a marvellous thing that God should be mindful of that individual of human nature; that he should prepare it in his council and covenant; that among the vast numbers of individuals which it came up in his infinite mind to create, he should choose this, to exalt it, and appoint it to union with his own Son, and take that delight in it he did; that when it was formed by his Spirit, he should anoint it with the oil of gladness above his fellows; that he should take such providential care of it, and so often and so strongly express his affection for it; that he should regard it, and support it under sufferings; and when in the grave, did not leave it, nor suffer it to see corruption; but raised it from the dead, and gave it glory, and exalted it at his own right hand; and the son of man, that thou visitest him? The name of "the son of man" is the name of the Messiah, in Psalms 80:17; and is often given to Christ, and used by him of himself in the New Testament. And this visiting of him is not to be understood in a way of wrath, though he was so visited by God, when he bore the chastisements of his people; but in a way of favour, by bestowing upon him without measure the gifts and graces of his Spirit; by affording him his gracious presence, and tilling him with spiritual peace and joy. Psalms 8:5 Ver. 5. For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels,....

[Bible] O God, cause us to turn back, And cause Thy face to shine, and we are saved. Jehovah, God of Hosts, till when? Thou hast burned against the prayer of Thy people. Thou hast caused them to eat bread of tears, And causest them to drink With tears a third time. Thou makest us a strife to our neighbors, And our enemies mock at it. God of Hosts, turn us back, And cause Thy face to shine, and we are saved. A vine out of Egypt Thou dost bring, Thou dost cast out nations, and plantest it. Thou hast looked before it, and dost root it, And it filleth the land, Covered have been hills [with] its shadow, And its boughs [are] cedars of God. It sendeth forth its branches unto the sea, And unto the river its sucklings. Why hast Thou broken down its hedges, And all passing by the way have plucked it? A boar out of the forest doth waste it, And a wild beast of the fields consumeth it. God of Hosts, turn back, we beseech Thee, Look from heaven, and see, and inspect this vine, And the root that Thy right hand planted, And the branch Thou madest strong for Thee, Burnt with fire — cut down, From the rebuke of Thy face they perish. Let Thy hand be on the man of Thy right hand, On the son of man Thou hast strengthened for Thyself. And we do not go back from Thee, Thou dost revive us, and in Thy name we call. O Jehovah, God of Hosts, turn us back, Cause Thy face to shine, and we are saved! Chapter 81 To the Overseer. — `On the Gittith.` By Asaph. Cry aloud to God our strength, Shout to the God of Jacob. Lift up a song, and give out a timbrel, A pleasant harp with psaltery. Blow in the month a trumpet, In the new moon, at the day of our festival, For a statute to Israel it [is], An ordinance of the God of Jacob. A testimony on Joseph He hath placed it, In his going forth over the land of Egypt. A lip, I have not known — I hear. From the burden his shoulder I turned aside, His hands from the basket pass over.

[Bible] And he ruleth them according to the integrity of his heart, And by the skilfulness of his hands leadeth them! Chapter 79 A Psalm of Asaph. O God, nations have come into Thy inheritance, They have defiled Thy holy temple, They made Jerusalem become heaps, They gave the dead bodies of Thy servants Food for the fowls of the heavens, The flesh of Thy saints For the wild beast of the earth. They have shed their blood As water round about Jerusalem, And there is none burying. We have been a reproach to our neighbours, A scorn and a derision to our surrounders. Till when, O Jehovah? art Thou angry for ever? Thy jealousy doth burn as fire. Pour Thy fury on the nations who have not known Thee, And on kingdoms that have not called in Thy name. For [one] hath devoured Jacob, And his habitation they have made desolate. Remember not for us the iniquities of forefathers, Haste, let Thy mercies go before us, For we have been very weak. Help us, O God of our salvation, Because of the honour of Thy name, And deliver us, and cover over our sins, For Thy name`s sake. Why do the nations say, `Where [is] their God?` Let be known among the nations before our eyes, The vengeance of the blood of Thy servants that is shed. Let the groaning of the prisoner come in before Thee, According to the greatness of Thine arm, Leave Thou the sons of death. And turn Thou back to our neighbours, Sevenfold unto their bosom, their reproach, Wherewith they reproached Thee, O Lord. And we, Thy people, and the flock of Thy pasture, We give thanks to Thee to the age, To all generations we recount Thy praise! Chapter 80 To the Overseer. — `On the Lilies.` A testimony of Asaph. — A Psalm. Shepherd of Israel, give ear, Leading Joseph as a flock, Inhabiting the cherubs — shine forth, Before Ephraim, and Benjamin, and Manasseh, Wake up Thy might, and come for our salvation. O God, cause us to turn back, And cause Thy face to shine, and we are saved. Jehovah, God of Hosts, till when? Thou hast burned against the prayer of Thy people.

[Hymns] 3 Turn us again, O Lord our God, and upon us vouchsafe To make thy countenance to shine, and so we shall be safe. 4 O Lord of hosts, almighty God, how long shall kindled be Thy wrath against the prayer made by thine own folk to thee? 5 Thou tears of sorrow giv'st to them instead of bread to eat; Yea, tears instead of drink thou giv'st to them in measure great. 6 Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours round about; Our enemies among themselves at us do laugh and flout. 7 Turn us again, O God of hosts, and upon us vouchsafe To make thy countenance to shine, and so we shall be safe. 8 A vine from Egypt brought thou hast, by thine outstretched hand; And thou the heathen out didst cast, to plant it in their land. 9 Before it thou a room didst make, where it might grow and stand; Thou causedst it deep root to take, and it did fill the land. The mountains vail'd were with its shade, as with a covering; Like goodly cedars were the boughs which out from it did spring. 11 Upon the one hand to the sea her boughs she did out send; On th' other side unto the flood her branches did extend. 12 Why hast thou then thus broken down, and ta'en her hedge away? So that all passengers do pluck, and make of her a prey. 13 The boar who from the forest comes doth waste it at his pleasure; The wild beast of the field also devours it out of measure. 14 O God of hosts, we thee beseech, return now unto thine; Look down from heav'n in love, behold, and visit this thy vine:

VII. In fine, we may refer to this point Zechariah 6:13, "The counsel of peace shall be between them both;" namely, between the man whose name is The Branch and Jehovah, for no other two occur here. It will not be foreign to our purpose to throw some light on this place by a short analysis and paraphrase. In this and the preceding verse, there is a remarkable prophecy concerning the Messiah, whose person, offices, and glory, the prophet truly describes in a short, but lively manner, subjoining at last the cause of all these; namely, why the Messiah appeared as such a person, executed such offices, and obtained such a glory; namely, because of that counsel which was between him and the Father, the fruit of which, with respect to us, is "peace." Of the person of the Messiah he says, that he is איש, the "man," that is, true man; see Hosea 2:15; and, indeed, the most eminent among men; not אדם or אנוש, which words denote "wretched man," but איש ימינך, "the man of thy right hand." Psalms 80:17. Because Christ is not here considered as in the abasement of his misery, but as in the excellence of his glory. His name is the Branch, because sprung from God, Isaiah 4:2, Zechariah 1:12
