Psalms 16

The whole psalm belongs to the Messiah, and everything concerning the person in it agrees with him; such as his trust in God, Psalms 16:1 as he was man and Mediator; his very great regard to the saints, and delight in them, Psalms 16:2 his disregard to others who were hastening after another God, or another Saviour, whose sacrifices, as an high priest, he would not offer up, nor make intercession for them, Psalms 16:4 his exceeding great satisfaction in having the God of Israel for his portion, and in having his lot cast among his peculiar people, who were a delightful inheritance to him, Psalms 16:5 his thankfulness for advice and direction in the time of his sorrows and sufferings; and his dependence on the almighty power of God to support and protect him, Psalms 16:7 and the joy and comfort he was filled with in the view of his resurrection from the dead, and his enjoyment of the heavenly glory, Psalms 16:9, I foresaw the Lord always before my face; Christ always had Jehovah in view throughout the whole of his life; and in his last moments he had respect unto the glory of his perfections, as the ultimate end of his obedience and sufferings; and to his purposes, council, and covenant, which were to be accomplished by him; and to his will and command in preaching the Gospel, working miracles, going about to do good, in obeying the precept, and bearing the penalty of the law; as well as to his promises, and his power to assist, support, and preserve him, as man and Mediator:

[ Psalms 16 ] A Poem by David. PSALM 16: 1 Preserve me, God, for in you do I take refuge. The contents of this Psalm are usually given in the following manner: David, sojourning among idolaters, and being obliged to leave his own country through Saul's persecution, cries to God for help; expresses his abhorrence of idolatry, and his desire to be again united to God's people, Psalms 16:1-4; and dedares his strong confidence in God, who had dealt bountifully with him, Psalms 16:5-7. Then follows a remarkable prophecy of the resurrection of Christ, Psalms 16:8-11. The title of this Psalm in the Hebrew is ‫מכתם‬ ‫לדוד‬ michtam ledavid, which the Chaldee translates, "A straight sculpture of David." The Septuagint, Στηλογραφια τῳ Δαυιδ, "The inscription on a pillar to David;" as if the Psalm had been inscribed on a pillar, to keep it in remembrance.

## He that doth these things here enumerated, and such things as naturally and necessarily flow from them, or are akin to them, and joined with them, he shall constantly persevere in God’s church here; and though he may be shaken, and stagger and fall, yet he shall never wholly and finally be removed or fall away from it, nor from that happiness which was proposed and promised to him, but shall abide with God here, and go to him when he dies, and be for ever with the Lord. ## Psalms 16:1 PSALM 16 ## Divers render this word Michtam, a golden Psalm , because of the preciousness and excellency of the matter of it; for it treats of Christ’s death and resurrection. But because this title is prefixed to Psa_56:1 57:1 58:1 59:1 60:1 , wherein there is no such peculiar excellency, it may seem rather to be a title belonging to the music or the song, which, with the rest, is now lost and unknown. It is a great question among expositors, in whose name and person he speaketh this Psalm, whether his own or Christ’s. It seems hard to exclude David’s person, to whom almost the whole Psalm properly and literally belongs, and to whom some parts of it do more conveniently belong than to Christ. And some parts of it do peculiarly belong to Christ, of whom it is expounded by the two great apostles, Peter and Paul, Act_2:25 13:35 . And yet it seems probable by the contexture of the Psalm, and the coherence of the several verses together, that the whole Psalm speaks of one and the same person.

[Bible] 15:4. Their infirmities were multiplied: afterwards they made haste. I will not gather together their meetings for bloodofferings: nor will I be mindful of their names by my lips. 15:5. The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup: it is thou that wilt restore my inheritance to me. 15:6. The lines are fallen unto me in goodly places: for my inheritance is goodly to me. 15:7. Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; nor wilt thou give thy holy one to see corruption. 15:11. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life, thou shalt fill me with joy with thy countenance: at thy right hand are delights even to the end. Psalms Chapter 16 Exaudi, Domine, justitiam. A just man's prayer in tribulation against the malice of his enemy. 16:1. The prayer of David. Hear, O Lord, my justice: attend to my supplication. Give ear unto my prayer, which proceedeth not from deceitful lips. 16:2. Let my judgment come forth from thy countenance: let thy eyes behold the things that are equitable. 16:3. Thou hast proved my heart, and visited it by night, thou hast tried me by fire: and iniquity hath not been found in me. 16:4. That my mouth may not speak the works of men: for the sake of the words of thy lips, I have kept hard ways. 16:5. Perfect thou my goings in thy paths: that my footsteps be not moved. 16:6. I have cried to thee, for thou, O God, hast heard me: O incline thy ear unto me, and hear my words. 16:7. Shew forth thy wonderful mercies; thou who savest them that trust in thee. 16:8. From them that resist thy right hand keep me, as the apple of thy eye. Protect me under the shadow of thy wings.

Hear, O Jehovah, righteousness, attend my cry, Give ear [to] my prayer, without lips of deceit. From before thee my judgment doth go out; Thine eyes do see uprightly. Thou hast proved my heart, Thou hast inspected by night, Thou hast tried me, Thou findest nothing; My thoughts pass not over my mouth. As to doings of man, Through a word of Thy lips I have observed The paths of a destroyer; To uphold my goings in Thy paths, My steps have not slidden. I — I called Thee, for Thou dost answer me, O God, incline Thine ear to me, hear my speech. Separate wonderfully Thy kindness, O Saviour of the confiding, By Thy right hand, from withstanders. Keep me as the apple, the daughter of the eye; In shadow of Thy wings thou dost hide me. From the face of the wicked who spoiled me. Mine enemies in soul go round against me. Their fat they have closed up, Their mouths have spoken with pride: `Our steps now have compassed [him];` Their eyes they set to turn aside in the land. His likeness as a lion desirous to tear, As a young lion dwelling in secret places. Arise, O Jehovah, go before his face, Cause him to bend. Deliver my soul from the wicked, Thy sword, From men, Thy hand, O Jehovah, From men of the world, their portion [is] in life, And [with] Thy hidden things Thou fillest their belly, They are satisfied [with] sons; And have left their abundance to their sucklings. Psalm 16 Michtam of David. 1 Lord, keep me; for I trust in thee.2 To God thus was my speech, Thou art my Lord; and unto thee my goodness doth not reach: 3 To saints on earth, to th' excellent, where my delight's all plac'd. 4 Their sorrows shall be multiply'd to other gods that haste: Of their drink-offerings of blood I will no off 'ring make; Yea, neither I their very names up in my lips will take. 5 God is of mine inheritance and cup the portion; The lot that fallen is to me thou dost maintain alone. 6 Unto me happily the lines in pleasant places fell; Yea, the inheritance I got in beauty doth excel. 7 I bless the Lord, because he doth by counsel me conduct; And in the seasons of the night my reins do me instruct. 8 Before me still the Lord I set: sith it is so that he Doth ever stand at my right hand, I shall not moved be. 9 Because of this my heart is glad, and joy shall be exprest Ev'n by my glory; and my flesh in confidence shall rest. 10 Because my soul in grave to dwell shall not be left by thee; Nor wilt thou give thine Holy One corruption to see.
