Psalms 145

David's psalm of praise. , and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. 4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. 5 I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works. 6 And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness. 7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness. 8 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. 9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. The entitling of this David's psalm of praise may intimate not only that he was the penman of it, but that he took a particular pleasure in it and sung it often; it was his companion wherever he went. In this former part of the psalm God's glorious attributes are praised, as, in the latter part of the psalm, his kingdom and the administration of it. Observe, I. Who shall be employed in giving glory to God. 1. Whatever others do, the psalmist will himself be much in praising God. To this good work he here excites himself, engages himself, and has his heart much enlarged in it. What he does, that he will do, having more and more satisfaction in it. It was his duty; it was his delight.

All that are upheld; whose support is not from themselves, nor from other men, but only from God’s’ powerful and good providence. ## Psalms 145:15 The eyes of all living creatures wait upon thee; expect and receive their supplies wholly from thy bounty. Expectation is here figuratively ascribed to brute creatures, as Psa_104:27 Rom_8:22. ## In due season; when they need it. Psalms 145:16 Or, as divers render it, and which is more agreeable to the order of the words in the Hebrew text, thou satisfiest every living thing with thy favour or good-will, i.e. with the fruits of thy bounty; the pronoun thy being easily and fitly understood out of the foregoing clause. ## Psalms 145:17 Holy; or rather, merciful, as this word most commonly signifies. There is a mixture of mercy in the most severe and terrible works of God in this life, judgment without mercy being reserved for the next life, Jam_2:13 Rev_14:10.

Confidently imploring God's interposition against his enemies, he breaks forth into praise and joyful anticipations of the prosperity of his kingdom, when freed from vain and wicked men. ## PSALM 145 Psalms 145:1-21. A Psalm of praise to God for His mighty, righteous, and gracious government of all men, and of His humble and suffering people in particular. 1, 2. (Compare Psalms 30:1). bless thy name —celebrate Thy perfections (Psalms 5:11). God is addressed as king, alluding to His government of men. 3. (Compare Psalms 18:3; 48:1). greatness —as displayed in His works. 4. shall declare —literally, "they shall declare," that is, all generations. 5. I will speak —or, "muse" (Psalms 77:12; 119:15). thy wondrous works —or, "words of thy wonders," that is, which described them (Psalms 105:27, Margin ). 6. terrible acts —which produce dread or fear. 7. memory —(Psalms 6:5), remembrance, or what causes to be remembered. righteousness —as in Psalms 143:1, goodness according to covenant engagement. 8, 9. (Compare Psalms 103:8; 111:4). over all, &c.—rests on all His works. 10. bless —as in Psalms 145:1, to praise with reverence, more than merely to praise. 11, 12. The declaration of God's glory is for the extension of His knowledge and perfections in the world. 13. (Compare Daniel 4:3, 34). 14. (Compare Psalms 37:17; 54:4). 15, 16. eyes of … thee —or, look with expecting faith (Psalms 104:27, 28). 17. holy … works —literally, "merciful" or "kind, goodness" (Psalms 144:2) is the corresponding noun.
