Numbers 26:50

26:1-51 Moses did not number the people but when God commanded him. We have here the families registered, as well as the tribes. The total was nearly the same as when numbered at mount Sinai. Notice is here taken of the children of Korah; they died not, as the children of Dathan and Abiram; they seem not to have joined even their own father in rebellion. If we partake not of the sins of sinners, we shall not partake of their plagues.

Of the sons of Naphtali, after their families,.... This tribe, which is the last of them, was numbered next to Asher, because it was with that under the standard of Dan; it had four families in it, the Jahzeelite, Gunite, Jezerite, and Shillemite, and its number was 45,400, being less by 8000 than it was when first numbered.

The children of Korah died not - Compare Numbers 26:58 . Samuel the prophet was of this family, and Heman, "the king's seer" 1 Chronicles 6:22 , 1 Chronicles 6:33 ; 1 Chronicles 25:5 . Several of the Psalms appear from the titles to have been composed for the sons of Korah: compare titles of Psalm 42:1-11 ; 44; 45, etc.

12. The sons of Simeon—It is supposed that this tribe had been pre-eminent in the guilt of Baal-peor and had consequently been greatly reduced in numbers. Thus God's justice and holiness, as well as His truth and faithfulness, were strikingly displayed: His justice and holiness in the sweeping judgments that reduced the ranks of some tribes; and His truth and faithfulness in the extraordinary increase of others so that the posterity of Israel continued a numerous people.

This also is the number of the sons of Levi by their families: Gerson, of whom is the family of the Gersonites: Caath, of whom is the family of the Caathites: Merari, of whom is the family of the Merarites. 26:58. These are the families of Levi: The family of Lobni, the family of Hebroni, the family of Core. Now Caath begot Amram: 26:59. Who had to wife Jochabed the daughter of Levi, who was born to him in Egypt. She bore to her husband Amram sons, Aaron and Moses, and Mary their sister. 26:60. Of Aaron were born Nadab and Abiu, and Eleazar and Ithamar: 26:61. Of whom Nadab and Abiu died, when they had offered the strange fire before the Lord.

(33) Expert in war . . . Marshalling (or ordering) battle with all kinds of weapons of war, and falling into rank ( la’adōr , forming in line) without a double heart. The expression “falling into rank” occurs only here and in 1Chronicles 12:38 . Nine MSS. read instead “ helping “ ( la’zōr ), and the LXX. and Vulg. so translate. The Syriac has “to make war with those who disputed the sovranty of David.” The phrase “falling into rank without a heart and a heart,” asserts the unwavering fidelity and resolute courage of these warriors of Zebulun (comp. Psalm 12:3 , “a speech of smooth things with heart and heart they speak”; they think one thing and say another; are double-minded). The number of warriors assigned to Zebulun and Naphtali has been thought surprising, because these tribes “never played an important part in the history of Israel” (comp., however, Judges 5:18 ). The numbers here given are, at all events, not discordant with those of Numbers 1:31 ; Numbers 1:43 ; Numbers 26:27 ; Numbers 26:50 .

Families of the half-tribe of Manasseh. - The families of Manasseh which dwelt in Gilead and Bashan have already been mentioned in 1 Chronicles 5:23 , 1 Chronicles 5:14 . Our verses deal with the families of this tribe which received their inheritance in Canaan, on this side Jordan. These were, according to Numbers 26:30 , Numbers 26:34 , and Joshua 17:2 , six families, of which, however, only two are here spoken of - Ashriel, 1 Chronicles 7:14 , and Shemidah, 1 Chronicles 7:19 ; or perhaps three, if Abiezer, 1 Chronicles 7:18 , be the same person as Jeezer ( Numbers 26:30 ), who is called Abiezer in Joshua 17:2 . The statements of 1 Chronicles 7:14 , 1 Chronicles 7:15 are very obscure. At the head of the register of the Manassites stands Ashriel, who, according to Numbers 26:31 , belonged to the sons of Gilead the son of Manasseh and the grandson of Joseph (cf. Genesis 50:23 ), and founded one of the six families of the cis-Jordanic Manassites. But the words which follow are obscure; the words are וגו ילרה אשׁר, "whom his Aramaic concubine bore; she bore Machir the father of Gilead." But since Ashriel, according to this, was the great-grandson of Manasseh, while Machir was his son, the relative clause can refer only to Manasseh, to whom his concubine bore Machir. Movers and Berth. would therefore erase אשׂריאל, as a gloss arising out of a doubling of the following יל אשר.
