20:27-38 It is common for those who design to undermine any truth of God, to load it with difficulties. But we wrong ourselves, and wrong the truth of Christ, when we form our notions of the world of spirits by this world of sense. There are more worlds than one; a present visible world, and a future unseen world; and let every one compare this world and that world, and give the preference in his thoughts and cares to that which deserves them. Believers shall obtain the resurrection from the dead, that is the blessed resurrection. What shall be the happy state of the inhabitants of that world, we cannot express or conceive,

Luke 20:31 . οὐ κατέλιπον τ . κ . ἀπέθανον , did not leave children and died, for died leaving no children. The emphasis is on the childlessness, therefore it is mentioned first. That the seven died in course of time was a matter of course, but that seven in succession should have no children was marvellous.

Verse 8. - Entered for went , A.V.; reasoning for disputing , A.V. ( διαλεγόμενος , as ver. 9 and Acts 17:2, 17 ; Acts 18:4, 19 , etc.); as to the things for the things , A.V. This last is a needless change, since πείθειν properly governs an accusative of the things persuaded or taught, and it is a right English use of "to persuade" to apply it to the thing inculcated. For the use of the phrase "the kingdom of God" as a compendious description of Christian doctrine, see Acts 1:3 ; Acts 8:12 ; Acts 20:25 ; Acts 28:23 . St. Luke uses the phrase very frequently ( Luke 6:20 ; Luke 8:10 ; Luke 9:27, 60, 62 ; Luke 10:11 ; Luke 11:20 ; Luke 13:20, 28 ; Luke 16:16 ; Luke 17:20 ; Luke 21:31 , etc.). Acts 19:8

The length of time that elapses is nothing to Him to Whom ‘a thousand years are but as one day.’ But as the seed is to all appearance very different to the plant which arises from it, although science tells us that it contains that whole plant in miniature, as the Body of Jesus after His Resurrection was endowed with many strange and new qualities (St John 20:19 ; John 20:26 ) so as often to be unrecognizable by His disciples (St Luke 24:16 ; Luke 24:31 ; Luke 24:37 ; St John 20:14 ; John 21:4 ) though yet it was the same body (St Luke 24:39-40 ; St John 20:20 ; John 20:27 ); so we learn that the body we sow in the grave is ‘not that body that shall be,’ but that the resurrection body—the spiritual body—while it exhibits visible and unequivocal signs of its connection with the body out of which it has arisen, will be possessed of many wondrous faculties which are denied to us here. See notes on next verse and on 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 , and cf. Romans 8:11 (margin), Revelation 21:4 . but bare grain ] i.e. naked grain. A nakid corn , Wiclif.
