Luke 10:6

X. 1. And after these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them by two and two before his face into every city and place, to which he was to come. 2. He said therefore to them, The harvest is indeed abundant, but the labourers are few: pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. 3. Go: behold, I send you as lambs among wolves. 4. Carry neither purse, nor bag, nor shoes, and salute no man by the way. 5. Into whatsoever house you shall enter, first say, Peace be to this house. 6. And if the son of peace be there, your peace will remain upon it: but if not, it will return to you. 7. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking those things which shall be given by them; l for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. 8. And into whatsoever city you shall enter, and they shall receive you, eat those things which are set before you: 9. And cure the diseased who are in it, and say to them, The kingdom of God is nigh to you. 10. And into whatsoever city you shall enter, and they shall not receive you, go out into its streets, and say, 11. Even the dust, which has cleaved to us from your city, we wipe off against you: yet know this, that the kingdom of God is nigh to you. 12. I say to you, That in that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that city.

10:1-16 Christ sent the seventy disciples, two and two, that they might strengthen and encourage one another. The ministry of the gospel calls men to receive Christ as a Prince and a Saviour; and he will surely come in the power of his Spirit to all places whither he sends his faithful servants. But the doom of those who receive the grace of God in vain, will be very fearful Those who despise the faithful ministers of Christ, who think meanly of them, and look scornfully upon them, will be reckoned as despisers of God and Christ.

And if the son of peace be there,.... If there be any elect person or persons in the house, whom God has chosen to partake of peace by the blood of Christ, and the benefits arising from it; and of a conscience peace in their souls, upon the best foundation; and of eternal peace in the world to come, though yet in a state of nature; and which may be known by this sign; your peace shall rest upon it: the salutation, or wish of peace, shall be well taken, and gratefully received; and upon this you will be kindly invited into the house, and used well by, those of the family; if not, it shall turn to you again: if there are no sons of peace, no elect persons there, your salutation, or wish of peace and prosperity to the family, will be despised and rejected, and will return to you without any good effect upon them.

Luke 10:6 . ἐπαναπαήσεται ([98] [99]), a form of the 2nd fut. ind. passive, probably belonging to the spoken Greek of the period. Again in Revelation 14:13 .— ἀνακάμψει : in any case the good wish will not be lost. If there be no “son of peace” in the house to receive it, it will come back with a blessing to the man who uttered it. Luke 10:6 . Ὁ υἱὸς εἰρήνης ) If there be there one who is a son of peace , one worthy of peace.— ἐπαναπαύσεται , shall rest ) in such a way as that you shall sensibly perceive it. As to the term, comp. 1 Peter 4:14 . Peace, when once it has gone out, does not cease to seek until it has found a place wherein it may stay.— ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ) This may be referred to υἱὸν εἰρήνης primarily, to οἶκον by implication.[92] [92] ‘Participativè,’ in the way of participation .
