19. Illa respondit, Da mihi benedictionem: quandoquidem terram aridam dedisti mihi, da mihi fontes aquarum. 15:20-63 Here is a list of the cities of Judah. But we do not here find Bethlehem, afterwards the city of David, and ennobled by the birth of our Lord Jesus in it. That city, which, at the best, was but little among the thousands of Judah, Mic 5:2, except that it was thus honoured, was now so little as not to be accounted one of the cities.

Lachish,.... Lachish and Eglon were royal cities, of which see Joshua 10:3 , and Bozkath, is called Boscath, of which place was the mother of King Josiah, 2 Kings 21:1; some take it to be the same with Bascana, as in the Apocrypha:"And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.'' (1 Maccabees 13:23) and Eglon also was a royal city, of which see Joshua 10:3.

Jos 15:21-63. Cities of Judah. 21-63. the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah—There is given a list of cities within the tribal territory of Judah, arranged in four divisions, corresponding to the districts of which it consisted—the cities in the southern part (Jos 15:21-32), those in the lowlands (Jos 15:33-47), those in the highlands (Jos 15:48-60), and those in the desert (Jos 15:61, 62). One gets the best idea of the relative situation of these cities by looking at the map.

(9) Adoraim. — Dûra; a village about seven and a-half miles south west of Hebron. Called Αδωρα 1 Maccabees 13:20 , and often mentioned by Josephus in connection with Marissa (Mareshah). The name is not found elsewhere in the Old Testament. Lachish.—Um Lakis; a ruined city on a round hill, seven hours west of Beit-jibrîn, on the road from Hebron to Gaza (Joshua 10:3; Joshua 15:39). Azekah.—Uncertain; near Socoh (1Samuel 17:1; Joshua 10:10; Joshua 15:35).

Verse 1. - Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign. So the writer of Chronicles ( 2 Chronicles 34:1 ) and Josephus ('Ant. Jud.,' 10:4. § 1). He must have been born, therefore, when his father was no more than sixteen years of age, and Amen must have married when he was only fifteen. And he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. Probably from B.C. 640 to B.C. 609 - a most important period of the world's history, including, as it does, (1) the great Scythic invasion; (2) the fall of Assyria; (3) the formation of the Median empire; and the foundation of the Babylonian empire by Nabopolasar. And his mother's name was Jedidah - i.e. "Darling" - the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath. Boscath is mentioned as among the cities of Judah ( Joshua 15:39 ). It lay in the Shefelah ( Joshua 15:33 ), not far from Lachish and Eglon. The recent explorers of Palestine identify it with the modern Um-el-Bikar , two miles and a half southeast of Ajlun (Eglon). Verse 9. - Adoraim . This name is not found anywhere else. The meaning of the word is "two heaps," and very probably describes the physical features of the site. It is probably the modern Dura. Its site is otherwise unknown. Lachish (see Joshua 15:39 ; also Joshua 10:3; 12:11); probably the modern Um Lakis , that lies on the road to Gaza. Other interesting references are 2 Kings 14:19 ; 2 Kings 18:14-17 ; 2 Kings 19:8 ; Nehemiah 11:30 ; Micah 1:13 . Azekha (see Joshua 15:35 ; also Joshua 10:10); it was in the Shefelah (see also 1 Samuel 17:1 ; Nehemiah 11:30 ; Jeremiah 34:7 ). The site of it is not identified. 2 Chronicles 11:9

and the border reached along from the top of the mountain toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and went out toward the cities of mount Ephron; and the border reached along to Baalah, that is, Kirjath-jearim; and the border turned from Baalah westwards toward mount Seir, and passed toward the side of Har-jearim, that is, Chesalon, northwards, and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed Timnah. And thence Caleb dispossessed the three sons of Anak, Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, who were born of Anak. And from there he went up against the inhabitants of Debir; now the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher. And Caleb said, He that smites Kirjath-sepher and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife. And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. And it came to pass as she came, that she urged him to ask of her father a field; and she sprang down from the ass. And Caleb said to her, What wouldest thou?
