15 And he went up from thence to the inhabitants of Debir, whose name was formerly Ciriath-sepher. 16 And Caleb said, To him who shall smite Ciriath-sepher and take it, will I give my daughter Achsa to wife. 17 And Othoniel the son of Cenas, the brother of Caleb, took it, and he gave him Achsa his daughter to wife. 18 And it was when she came, that she persuaded him to ask a field of her father, and she dismounted from the ass, and Caleb said to her, What would thou? 19 She answered, Give me a blessing; since thou has given me an arid land, give me springs of water. And he gave her upper springs and lower springs. 20 That is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families. 21 And the cities in the extremity of the tribe of Judah, near the border of Edom on the south were Capsee, and Eder, and Jagur, 22 And Cina, and Dimona, and Adada, 23 And Cedes, and Hasor, and Ithnan, 24 Ziph, and Telem, and Bealot, 25 And Hazor, and Hadatha, and Cerioth, Hesron, the same is Hazor. 26 Amam, and Sema, and Molada, 27 And Hasar-Gadda, and Hesmon, and Beth-phelet, 28 And Hasar-sual, and Beerseba, and Biziotheia, 29 Baala, and Jim, and Asem, 30 And Eltholad, and Chesil, and Hormah, 31 And Siclag, and Madmannah, and Sensannah, 32 And Lebaoth, and Silhim, and Ain, and Rimon: all the cities twenty-nine, and their villages. 33 In the plain Esthaol, and Sora, and Asnah, 34 And Zanoah, and En-gannim, and Thaphuah, and Enam, 35 Jarmuth, and Adulam, Sochoch, and Azecah,

Josephus {s} says this was not long after the things related in the preceding chapter were transacted; and very probably they had heard of the melancholy and distraction of Saul, and thought it a proper opportunity of avenging themselves on Israel for their last slaughter of them, and for that purpose gathered together their dispersed troops: and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah; a city of the tribe of Judah, Joshua 15:35, which shows that, notwithstanding their last defeat, they had great footing in the land of Israel, or however had penetrated far into it in this march of theirs: and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah; which were both in the same tribe, and near one another, of which See Gill on "Joshua 10:10", See Gill on "Joshua 15:35". in Ephesdammim; which, by an apocope of the first letter, is called Pasdammim, 1 Chronicles 11:13 which the Jews {t} say had this name because there blood ceased. {s} Antiqu. l. 6. c. 9. sect. 1. {t} Midrash Ruth, fol. 48. 2. 15:20-63 Here is a list of the cities of Judah. But we do not here find Bethlehem, afterwards the city of David, and ennobled by the birth of our Lord Jesus in it. That city, which, at the best, was but little among the thousands of Judah, Mic 5:2, except that it was thus honoured, was now so little as not to be accounted one of the cities.

Jarmuth, and Adullam,.... The two first of these were royal cities, of which see Joshua 10:3 , Socoh; Jerom says (m) there were two little villages in his day of the name of Socho, as you go to Aelia (or Jerusalem), from Eleutheropolis, in the ninth mile on the public way, one in the mountain, and the other in the plain, (the same with this,) both of which were called Socoth: of this place was Antigonus, president of the sanhedrim, and successor of Simeon the just, called in the Misnah (n) a man of Socho: and Azekah; See Gill on Joshua 10:10; it appears to be near to Socoh from 1 Samuel 17:1, where the Philistines are said to pitch their camp between them. Jos 15:21-63. Cities of Judah. 21-63. the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah—There is given a list of cities within the tribal territory of Judah, arranged in four divisions, corresponding to the districts of which it consisted—the cities in the southern part (Jos 15:21-32), those in the lowlands (Jos 15:33-47), those in the highlands (Jos 15:48-60), and those in the desert (Jos 15:61, 62). One gets the best idea of the relative situation of these cities by looking at the map.

"The valley" or the Shephelah, is bounded on the south by the Negeb, on the west by the Mediterranean, on the north by the plain of Sharon, on the east by "the mountains" Joshua 15:48 . It is a well-defined district, of an undulating surface and highly fertile character, thickly dotted, even at the present time, with villages, which are for the most part situated on the different hills. The towns in this district, like those in the Negeb, are classed in four groups. Joshua 15:33-36 First group of fourteen towns: these belong to the northeastern portion of the Shephelah. Eshtaol and Zoreah were afterward assigned to the tribe of Dan, and inhabited by Danites Judges 13:25; Judges 18:2, Judges 18:8,Judges 18:11. The latter place was the home of Samson Judges 13:2. It was one of the cities fortified by Rehoboam 2 Chronicles 11:10, and was re-occupied by the Jews after the captivity Nehemiah 11:29. It is probably the modern Surah. (Eshtaol has been identified with Eshua (Conder)). Both places were in later times partly populated by Judahites from Kirjath-jearim; perhaps after the departure of the colony of Danites for Dan-Laish. Zanoah is the present "Zanna", not far from Surah. Socoh is the modern "Shuweikah". Sharaim is perhaps to be sought in the modern "Zakariya". Gederah ("wall" or "fortress") was a name borne with various terminations by several places.

Jarmuth, i.e., Jarmk; see Joshua 10:3 . Adullam has not yet been discovered with certainty (see at Joshua 12:15 ). Socoh, which was fortified by Rehoboam, and taken by the Philistines in the reign of Ahaz ( 2 Chronicles 11:7 ; 2 Chronicles 28:18 ), is the present Shuweikeh by the Wady Sumt, half an hour to the south-west of Jarmk, three hours and a half to the south-west of Jerusalem (see Rob. ii. pp. 343, 349). The Onom. (s. v. Socoh) mentions two viculi named Sochoth, one upon the mountain, the other in the plain, nine Roman miles from Eleutheropolis on the road to Jerusalem. Having now recovered their spirits and strength, they sought an opportunity of wiping out the infamy of that national disaster, as well as to regain their lost ascendency over Israel. Shocoh —now Shuweikeh, a town in the western plains of Judah (Joshua 15:35), nine Roman miles from Eleutheropolis, toward Jerusalem [R OBINSON ]. Azekah —a small place in the neighborhood. Ephes-dammim —or, "Pas-dammim" (1 Chronicles 11:13), "the portion" or "effusion of blood," situated between the other two. 2. valley of Elah —that is, "the Terebinth," now Wady Er-Sumt [R OBINSON ]. Another valley somewhat to the north, now called Wady Beit Hanina, has been fixed on by the tradition of ages. 1 Samuel 17:4-11. G OLIATH C HALLENGES A C OMBAT. 4-11. a champion — Hebrew, a "man between two"; that is, a person who, on the part of his own people, undertook to determine the national quarrel by engaging in single combat with a chosen warrior in the hostile army. 5. helmet of brass —The Philistine helmet had the appearance of a row of feathers set in a tiara, or metal band, to which were attached scales of the same material, for the defense of the neck and the sides of the face [O SBORN ]. a coat of mail —a kind of corslet, quilted with leather or plates of metal, reaching only to the chest, and supported by shoulder straps, leaving the shoulders and arms at full liberty. ## 6.
