18 Therefore thus saith Jehovah, Of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah the king of Judea, They shall not bewail him, — "Ah, my brother! Ah, sister!" They shall not bewail him, — "Ah, Lord! Ah, his glory!" 19 With the burial of an ass shall he be buried, Drawn out and cast forth Beyond the gates of Jerusalem. 20 Ascend into Lebanon and cry, And on Bashan lift up thy voice, And cry all around, For destroyed are all thy lovers. 21 I spake to thee in thy tranquillity, Thou saidst, "I will not hear:" It has been thy manner from thy youth That thou didst not hear my voice. 22 Thy pastors shall the wind consume, And thy lovers, into exile shall they go: Surely ashamed shalt thou then be, And blush for all thy wickedness. 23 Thou hast set thy seat on Lebanon, Thou hast made thy nest among the cedars: How gracious wilt thou be When come on thee shall sorrows, The pain as of one in travail! 24 Live do I, saith Jehovah; Were Coniah the son of Jehoiakim the king of Judah A sealing ring on my right hand, I would thence pluck thee off: 25 And I will deliver thee Into the hand of those who seek thy life, And into the hand of those whose face thou dreadest, Even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar The king of Babylon, And into the hand of the Chaldeans: 26 And I will cast thee and thy mother who bare thee Into a foreign land where ye were not born, And there shall ye die; 27 And into the land they set their mind to return, Thither they shall not return. 28 Is this man Coniah a despised and broken statue?

The first thing then is, that the Prophet was bidden to write another roll, after the King Jehoiakim vented his rage against the roll read before him; and hence he carefully repeats the words, Take to thee another roll, and write in it the same words which were in the first book; as though he had said, "Let not a syllable be omitted, but let that which I once proclaimed by thy mouth, remain unchanged; and let thus all the ungodly know that thou hast faithfully delivered what thou didst receive from my mouth." It follows -- Jeremiah 36:29-30 29. And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast? 29. Therefore thus saith the LORD of Jehoiakim king of Judah, He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost. 30. [Bible] 28:5. And Jeremias the prophet said to Hananias the prophet in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the Lord: 28:6. And Jeremias the prophet said: Amen, the Lord do so: the Lord perform thy words, which thou hast prophesied: that the vessels may be brought again into the house of the Lord, and all the captives may return out of Babylon to this place. 28:7. Nevertheless hear this word that I speak in thy ears, and in the ears of all the people: 28:8. The prophets that have been before me, and before thee from the beginning, and have prophesied concerning many countries, and concerning great kingdoms, of war, and of affliction, and of famine. 28:9. The prophet that prophesied peace: when his word shall come to pass, the prophet shall be known, whom the hath sent in truth. 28:10. And Hananias the prophet took the chain from the neck of Jeremias the prophet, and broke it. 28:11. And Hananias spoke in the presence of all the people, saying: Thus saith the Lord: Even so will I break the yoke of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon after two full years from off the neck of all the nations. 28:12. And Jeremias the prophet went his way. And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, after that Hananias the prophet had broken the chain from off the neck of Jeremias the prophet, saying: 28:13. Go, and tell Hananias: Thus saith the Lord: Thou hast broken chains of wood, and thou shalt make for them chains of iron. 28:14. For thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, to serve Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and they shall serve him: moreover also I have given him the beasts of the earth. 28:15. And Jeremias the prophet said to Hananias the prophet: Hear now, Hananias: the Lord hath not sent thee, and thou hast made this people to trust in a lie.

10 . Pestilence and the sword. By the pestilence ( déber ) is meant what we should term an epidemic accompanied by great mortality, such as under the insalubrious sanitary conditions of Eastern life, are of frequent occurrence: it is often mentioned in the Old Testament, and frequently threatened as a judgement, especially as the concomitant of a siege; e.g. Leviticus 26:25 ; Deuteronomy 28:21 ; 1 Kings 8:37 ; 2 Samuel 24:15 ; Psalm 91:3 ; Psalm 91:6 (“the pestilence that walketh in darkness”); and often in Jeremiah (“the sword, the famine, and the pestilence”), as Jeremiah 14:12 ; Jeremiah 21:7 ; Jeremiah 21:9 ; Jeremiah 24:10 ; Jeremiah 29:17-18 &c., cf. Jeremiah 28:8 ; so in Ezekiel 5:12 ; Ezekiel 6:11-12 ; Ezekiel 7:15 (“the sword without, the pestilence and the famine within”), Ezekiel 14:21 (one of Jehovah’s ‘four sore judgements’). in the manner of Egypt ] i.e. in the manner in which it is wont to visit Egypt ( Isaiah 10:26 b ), with the same severity and malignity. The climate of Egypt was proverbially insalubrious ( Deuteronomy 7:15 ; Deuteronomy 28:60 , cf. Deuteronomy 28:27 , “the boil of Egypt,” probably some malignant pestilential boil); and “throughout antiquity the north-east corner of the Delta was regarded with reason as the home of the Plague,” whence often, it is probable, it was brought into Israel by Philistine traders (see G. A. Smith, Geogr. , pp. 157–160). Even in modern times, according to Sir G.

Verse 1. - The first sign in this method of unspoken prophecy was to indicate to the exiles of Tel-Abib that which they were unwilling to believe The day of uncertain hopes and fears, of delusive dreams and promises ( Jeremiah 27:16 ; Jeremiah 28:1-3 ; Jeremiah 29:21 ), was nearly over. The siege of Jerusalem in spite of Zedekiab's Egyptian alliance, was a thing decreed. Four years before it came - we are now between the fourth month of the fifth year ( Ezekiel 1:2 ) and the sixth month of the sixth year ( Ezekiel 8:1 ) of Zedekiah. and the siege began in the ninth year ( 2 Kings 25:1 ) - Ezekiel, on the segnius irritant principle, brought it, as here narrated, before the eyes of the exiles. That he did so implies a certain artistic culture, in possessing which he stands alone, so far as we know, among the prophets of Israel, and to which his residence in the land of the Chaldees may have contributed. He takes a tile, or tablet of baked clay, such as were used in Babylon and Assyria for private contracts, historical inscriptions, astronomical observations (Pliny, 'Hist.

aith and holiness. ## Jeremiah 52:24 See Poole " 2Ki_25:18 " , where we have the same words. This Seraiah was not he mentioned Jer_51:59, but the son of Azariah, 1Ch_6:14. By the ## second priest, interpreters understand him that supplied the place of the high priest in case he were sick, &c., he that was sent by Zedekiah to the prophet, Jer_21:1, and whom Jeremiah chose by his letters, Jer_29:25, for not setting Jeremiah in the stocks. It is probable there were more keepers of the door, but the captain of the guard took only three of the principal. Jeremiah 52:25 See 2Ki_25:19; only there is mention out of five men, here there is mention of seven, but probably two of them were of less note. Jeremiah 52:26 No text from Poole on this verse. ## Jeremiah 52:27 See 2Ki_25:20 ,21 . But there is a difference in the number of the captives, which are here said to be three thousand and twenty-three, and 2Ki_24:14 ,16 , seven thousand, or eight. It is thought by some that the number here mentioned were such as properly belonged to Judah, and the number mentioned 2Ki 24 , were the number of the captives of Judah and Benjamin.
