[Bible] 9:18. Let them hasten and take up a lamentation for us: let our eyes shed tears, and our eyelids run down with waters. 9:19. For a voice of wailing is heard out of Sion: How are we wasted and greatly confounded? because we have left the land, because our dwellings are cast down. 9:20. Hear therefore, ye women, the word of the Lord: and let your ears receive the word of his mouth: and teach your daughters wailing: and every one her neighbour mourning. 9:21. For death is come up through our windows, it is entered into our houses to destroy the children from without, the young men from the streets. 9:22. Speak: Thus saith the Lord: Even the carcass of man shall fall as dung upon the face of the country, and as grass behind the back of the mower, and there is none to gather it. 9:23. Thus saith the Lord: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, and let not the strong man glory in his strength, and let not the rich man glory in his riches: 9:24. But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, for I am the Lord that exercise mercy, and judgment, and justice in the earth: for these things please me, saith the Lord. 9:25. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, and I will visit upon every one that hath the foreskin circumcised. 9:26. Upon Egypt, and upon Juda, and upon Edom, and upon the children of Ammon, and upon Moab, and upon all that have their hair polled round, that dwell in the desert: for all the nations are uncircumcised in the flesh, but all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart. Jeremias Chapter 10 Neither stars nor idols are to be feared, but the great Creator of all things. The chastisement of Jerusalem for her sins. 10:1. Hear ye the word which the Lord hath spoken concerning you, O house of Israel. 10:2. Thus saith the Lord: Learn not according to the ways of the Gentiles: and be not afraid of the signs of heaven, which the heathens fear:

Amos 3:7 ); but the word rendered musing does not seem one that would be used very naturally of the Divine purpose. that maketh the morning darkness ] viz. suddenly blackening the clear sky with the dark masses of storm-cloud. In the thunderstorm, the Hebrews conceived Jehovah to be borne along within the clouds ( Psalm 18:9-13 ; cf. on ch. Amos 1:2 ): the picture of Jehovah darkening the heavens with the gathering storm thus leads on naturally to the clause which follows. and treadeth —or marcheth — upon the high places of the earth ] viz. in the thunder-cloud, as it sweeps along the hills. For the expression, comp. (of Israel) Deuteronomy 32:13 ; Isaiah 58:14 ; (of Jehovah) Micah 1:3 : also Job 9:8 (“who marcheth upon the high places of the sea”). Jehovah of hosts , is his name ] The title is expressive of majesty and omnipotence: see on Amos 3:13 . It stands in the same emphatic formula as here, Amos 5:27 (‘ God of hosts’); Isaiah 47:4 ; Isaiah 48:2 ; Isaiah 51:15 ; Isaiah 54:5 ; Jeremiah 10:16 (= Jeremiah 51:19 ), Jeremiah 31:35 , Jeremiah 32:18 , Jeremiah 46:18 , Jeremiah 48:15 , Jeremiah 50:34 , Jeremiah 51:57 .

The sense of the expression, over whom my name was called , appears clearly from 2 Samuel 12:28 , where Joab, while besieging Rabbah of the Ammonites, invites David to come and take it himself “lest I (emph.) take the city, and my name be called over it ,” i.e. lest I get the credit of having captured it, and it be counted as my conquest. The phrase expresses thus the fact of ownership —whether acquired by actual conquest or otherwise (cf. Isaiah 4:1 ). It is used especially of the people of Israel, Jerusalem, or the temple, as owned by Jehovah: see Deuteronomy 28:10 ; Jeremiah 7:10-11 ; Jeremiah 7:14 ; Jeremiah 7:30 ; Jeremiah 14:9 ; Jeremiah 15:16 (of Jeremiah himself), Jeremiah 25:29 , Jeremiah 32:34 , Jeremiah 34:15 ; 1 Kings 8:43 (= 2 Chronicles 6:33 ); Isaiah 63:19 ; 2 Chronicles 7:14 ; Daniel 9:18-19 ; and the newly-recovered Hebrew text of Sir 47:18 . In A.V., R.V., the phrase is often, unfortunately, represented by the obscure paraphrase, “called by my name”; but the literal rendering, which is both clearer and more forcible than the paraphrase, is sometimes added in the margin of R.V. (e.g. 1 Kings 8:43 ). that doeth this ] An epithet confirmatory of the preceding promise; cf. Jeremiah 33:2 . Amos 9:11-12 stands in the LXX. (cod.

Jeremiah Jer 14:12; Jeremiah 29:17-18 ; Jeremiah 34:17 and Ezekiel ( Ezekiel 5:12 ; Ezekiel 6:11 , etc.) prophesied them anew, together with the sword and with famine. Israel, having sinned like Egypt, was to be punished like Egypt. And have taken away your horses - Literally, as English margin. "with the captivity of your horses." After famine, drought, locust, pestilence, followed that worst scourge of all, that through man. The possessions of the plain of Jezreel, so well suited for cavalry, probably induced israel to break in this respect the law of Moses. Hazael "left to Jehoahaz but 50 horsemen and 10 chariots and 10,000 footmen, for the king of Syria had destroyed them, and had made them like the dust by threshing." Their armies, instead of being a defense, lay unburied on the ground, a fresh source of pestilence.

Exodus 5:3 , "Let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the Lord our God. lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword." Leviticus 26:6 , "Neither shall the sword go through your land," so Isaiah 1:20; Jeremiah 24:10,10,10,10 , and Jeremiah 43:11; Psalms 144:10; Romans 8:35 , and several other places. It is said, Matthew 10:34 , "I came not to send peace, but a sword" that is, no such peace as that men will rest contented and quiet in Paganism, or irreligion, but contend earnestly for the true religion in their confessions and preaching of the Gospel, even through sufferings, persecution, and blood, etc.
