Ahinadab the son of Iddo had Mahanaim. Another city on the other side Jordan, where both Ishbosheth and David sometimes dwelt, 2 Samuel 2:8 ; this and the places adjacent must be very fruitful, since this officer was to furnish the king with provisions for a month once a year from hence,

If this district seem of less extent than the rest, it must be observed, these portions were distributed into larger or lesser parts, according to their barrenness or fertility; and this seems to have been a very fruitful place, 2 Samuel 17:27 . Shimei, the son of Elah — This is added to distinguish him from the Shimei who cursed and insulted David.

(14) The seventh division, still on the other side of Jordan, is the region of Mahanaim, in the territory of Gad. Mahanaim (“the camps”), the scene of Jacob’s angelic vision on his return to Canaan ( Genesis 36:3 ), assigned to Dan after the Conquest (see Joshua 13:26 ; Joshua 13:30 ; Joshua 21:38 ), must have been afterwards an important place; for it was the seat of Ishbosheth’s government ( 2Samuel 2:8 ; 2Samuel 2:12 ; 2Samuel 2:29 ), and the place where David established himself on fleeing from Absalom ( 2Samuel 17:24 ; 2Samuel 17:27 ), and where he received large supplies from Barzillai and other chiefs.

But this seems too narrow a compass for one of these great officers, and unequal to the rest; although these portions seem not to be distributed into equal portions of land, but into larger or lesser parts, according to their fertility or barrenness. And this seems to have been a very fruitful place. See 2 Samuel 17:27 . Or, to Mahanaim . So he may understand all the space from the parts last mentioned to Mahanaim, which was in the tribe of Gad.

Verse 14. - Ahinadab the son of Iddo [probably the seer of that name, 2 Chronicles 9:29 ] had Mahanaim [Heb. to Mahanaim , as marg. That is, went, or was appointed, to Mahanaim. Rawlinson understands that his district was "from the places last mentioned to Mahanaim," but for this the usus loquendi of the writer would lead us to expect עַד . Ahinadab the son of Iddo received as his district Mahanaim, a fortified and probably also a very important city to the north of the Jabbok, on the border of the tribe of Gad, which may perhaps have been preserved in the ruin of Mahneh (see at Joshua 13:26 and Genesis 32:3 ). מחנימה, to Mahanaim (cf. Ewald, 216, a., note), with ה local, probably referring to the fact that Ahinadab was sent away to Mahanaim.

And the barley, and the straw for the horses and coursers, they brought to the place where [the superintendents] were, every man according to his charge. And God gave Solomon wisdom and very great understanding and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore. And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying, Thou knowest that David my father could not build a house unto the name of Jehovah his God, because of the wars which were about him on every side, until Jehovah put them under the soles of his feet. But now Jehovah my God has given me rest on every side: there is neither adversary nor evil event.
